Why patterns matter
The pattern decides how long a round lasts. A single line can be won in a handful of calls, while a full blackout can take most of the deck. Mixing patterns keeps players engaged and lets you control the pace of the event.
Quick patterns
- Single line: any row, column or diagonal
- Four corners: the four outer corner squares
- Small diamond: the four squares touching the center
- Postage stamp: a 2x2 block in any corner

- Letter X: both diagonals
- Letter T: top row plus the middle column
- Plus sign: middle row and middle column
- Two lines: any two complete lines

Long patterns
- Blackout (coverall): every square on the card
- Letter H or L or U
- Large diamond
- Six-pack: a 2x3 block anywhere on the card
How to announce a pattern
Draw the pattern on a whiteboard or hold up a sample card with the squares shaded. Many groups play in rising difficulty: a line first, then corners, then a big pattern, and a blackout as the finale.
