Sixteen squares give a medium-length game. There is no single center square, so 4x4 cards have no free space. They work well for elementary classrooms and short party rounds.

Matching size to word list
If your word list is short, a smaller grid gives better variety between cards. As a rule, aim for a word list about one and a half times the number of squares so cards look different from each other.
