Official Bingo Rules Explained (75-Ball and Custom Games)

The standard card

A standard American bingo card has five columns headed B, I, N, G and O, and five rows. Each column draws from a fixed number range: B uses 1 to 15, I uses 16 to 30, N uses 31 to 45, G uses 46 to 60 and O uses 61 to 75. The center square is usually free, so the N column holds four numbers.

Calling rules

Numbers are drawn at random without replacement, which means each number can be called only once per game. The caller announces the letter and number, and many callers repeat it. Players are responsible for marking their own cards.

Winning rules

The winning pattern must be announced before the first call. A player must call 'Bingo' before the next number is drawn. If they miss it and a later number is called, many halls rule that the earlier win no longer counts, so pay attention.

Ties and split prizes

If two or more players complete the pattern on the same call, they share the win. Home games often split the prize or hold a quick tie-breaker, such as drawing a high number. Agree on your tie rule before play starts.

False bingos

A false bingo happens when a player calls bingo but the card does not check out. The standard response is simply to resume the game. In friendly games, a light penalty like leading the next song keeps things fun.

House rules for custom games

Word bingo, classroom bingo and party bingo follow the same principles, but the caller reads words instead of numbers. Write your house rules on a board so everyone sees them: pattern, number of winners per round, and what happens with ties.
