The free center square counts as marked from the start. It makes lines through the center easier to complete, which speeds up the game and gives everyone an early sense of progress.
Why it's in the center
The center square sits on four possible lines: the middle row, the middle column and both diagonals. That makes it the most valuable square on the card.

Remove the free space for longer games, harder classroom reviews, or when your word list is large enough to fill every square. On 4x4 cards there is no center square, so there is no free space.
